Professor of Religious Studies
David Reis teaches and researches ancient Mediterranean cultures and societies with a specific focus on the early history of Christianity. Currently, he works as a Courtesy Visiting Professor and Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Oregon. In the past, Dr. Reis has served as an Assistant Professor at Bridgewater College and at the College of Santa Fe (now the Santa Fe University of Art and Design) and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Wells College and West Virginia University. During his four years at Bridgewater College, David Reis authored a number of articles and book chapters in such publications as the Journal of Early Christian Studies, The Bible and Critical Theory, and Studia Patristica.
David Reis completed his Ph.D. in Religion and the History of Christianity at Claremont Graduate University before beginning his teaching career. While working on his Doctor of Philosophy at Claremont, he received a grant from the school to complete his dissertation, The Journey of the Soul: Its Expressions in Early Christianity. Upon receiving his Ph.D., he worked for a year at West Virginia University, followed by four years at Wells College in Aurora, New York. From 2004 to 2006, David Reis taught at the College of Santa Fe, where he gave such courses as Religious Studies, World Religions I and II, and Religion and Ethics. In 2006, he joined the University of Oregon as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
Two years later, David Reis was hired by Bridgewater College, where he served as an Assistant Professor, teaching as many as eight classes per year on religion and the history of religion. He also held other positions within the school, such as faculty representative with the Writing Instruction Focus Group and the Graduate Fellowships Committee. During his tenure at Bridgewater College, David Reis also published academic articles and presented invited lectures, including “Eyesight to the Blind: A Scriptural Sounding at the Festival of Booths,” which he gave at a meeting of the North River Ministerial Association in Bridgewater, Virginia.
